Eros in a Snow Globe, Piccadily Circus, London

It’s that time of year again. Christmas is fast approaching and  Piccadily Circus gets dressed up for the Christmas Celebrations. The colourful bright lights of the advertising  neon lights, and the illuminated Reindeer Antlers lining Regent Street draws thousands of visitors to London every year.

Eros as seen from Leicester Square

I was in London for the day and as i walked from Leicester Square up to Piccadily I became aware of a big glass like globe surrounding Eros. At first I thought that he was undergoing some repair work but as I drew nearer I realised that he was surrounded by a giant Snow Globe.

It is  the time of year when the local authority has to think about protecting Eros from drunken revelers to the Capital. In the past people have managed to climb up to the statue, which is made of aluminium and is set on a bronze fountain, and damage it, even one year breaking off his bow.

Eros in a snow globe

Sandbags protected Eros from the German bombers during the 2nd world war. A bird cage protected him from the throngs of people celebrating the Queens Coronation in 1953 and this year he has been enclosed in what is known as a Snow Globe. The globe is made of PVC and is meant to blow snow around creating a seasonal wintery feeling but it wasn’t working the day i was there 🙁
