Since my flight was leaving early morning, i decided to travel down to London Gatwick Airport by the last train the evening before and try and get some sleep in the terminal. I was not the only one who had to resort to this type of accommodation for a night. Many others were there before me and had already taken up the “best ” places on the benches without arm rests, so that only left me one option and that was to find a relatively quiet and if possible draft proof area on the floor in which to rest my head on my backpack.
Wandering around the terminal i noticed how many different sleeping positions travellers had adopted and asked myself how they were able to sleep comfortably in that position………… To pass some time i decided to photograph some of them.
What is your favourite airport sleeping position?
So what do we travellers need to bear in mind when sleeping at an airport?
- Floors can be cold, so bring along a sleeping mat or find some old newspaper to use as insulation
- If you are disturbed by lights then pack some eye shades to block out the light
- Ear plugs are a must as the airport intercom system works 24 hours with messages and updates for travellers
- Make sure you have a bottle of water and a snack as most snack bars close overnight
- If for some reason you cannot sleep then find a convenient place near to an electrical socket for charging your laptop or phone and watch a movie or listen to music.
- Last of all make sure that if you do manage to sleep that you wake up for your flight check-in time by setting your mobile phone alarm clock. Another idea is to make a sign asking people to wake you at your desired hour if they see you still sleeping
