A Quiet Place to Get Away from the Crowds on Boracay

Puka  Beach Boracay, takes its name from the small Puka Shells found there, and is situated on the northern end of the island in Barangay Yapak. The sand is alot rougher here than the powdery sand making up White Beach, but it is worth the trek just to get away from the crowds of Korean package tourists and persistant beach vendors that inhabit the White Beach everyday making it unbearable.

The turquoise colour of the sea at Puka  Beach is both crystal clear and great for swimming although there is a persistant current that will take you further along the shore, which you should be aware of.

The island of Carabao can be seen quite clearly too and looks so near but unless you take an island hopping tour from White Beach, which can be quite expensive, there is only one way to get there and that is by leaving Boracay at Cagban and taking the Pumpboat along the beach in Caticlan for a 90 minute journey.

At the end of the day Puka Beach is also a good place to bring a beer and sit and watch the amazing sunsets. Also look out for the daily ferry to Mindoro that goes sailing past.

Getting to Puka Beach

Puka Beach is definitely walkable from anywhere on Boracay, but taking a tricycle back is preferable and there are usually many just waiting for you by the souvenir huts.  There are a couple of routes for walking to Puka beach…..

  1. Walk north along the  length of White Beach and once you reach the end, bear to the left and follow the footpath round the point. You will pass a small Virgin Mary grotto in a cave….. then continue to follow the path round the cliffs and pass through a couple of bays until you reach Diniwid Beach, where there is a nice little watering hole to sit and have a well deserved ice cold beer. After you have had your ice cold beer, find the alleyway that leads to a road and some kiosks……… you then have two choices…. either continue walking to Diniwid junction, turn left and walk north following the road all the way to Barangay Yapak which will take about 30 minutes, OR you can take a tricycle from Diniwid beach to Puka beach, if your legs have had enough exercise or you have had one too many beers at the Wahnine bar..  🙂

  2. The other route is just to follow the road, and there is only one road that traverses Boracay from north to south, north all the way to Barangay Yapak and Puka Beach……. this is also a good walk up and down hills and passing through the different Barangays along the way.

What to take to Puka Beach

Obviously if you are walking you will need an ample supply of water and a hat as the sun can be quite hot.  You will also need some money for buying from the local craft stalls at the entrance to the beach, sunscreen cream, your camera and swimming gear.

If it is not too late in the day there is a guy there who sells fresh buko juice ( green coconut water )……. make sure you get him to cut it open after you finish drinking so that you may eat the delicious tender young coconut flesh.
