The Joy of Wandering

Finding Connection Through Walking

The Joy of Aimless Wandering

We live in a time where maps and navigation apps are ever-present, guiding our every step. Yet, there’s something uniquely enriching about letting go of that certainty and embracing the art of wandering. For me, the thrill lies in the not-knowing—when your surroundings are unfamiliar, your senses come alive, sharpening to the details around you.

Every journey starts from the familiar. You leave your known streets, tread paths you’ve seen in passing, and, if you persist, you’ll stumble into uncharted spaces. With each step, the map of the city in your mind expands, stitching together places that once felt disconnected. It’s a way of learning a place deeply—not through guidebooks but through your feet and the rhythms of the street.

Cities, unlike uniform landscapes, offer a rich tapestry of experiences. Buildings may stay static, but the people don’t. Faces change; life moves in every direction. Urban walking might not provide the sweeping vistas of countryside trails, but it offers the constant buzz of human activity—a living, breathing story unfolding around you.

Making Connections while Walking

If you wander with your eyes open, there are surprises everywhere. Under the Arches in London, I once looked up and saw an underground train lit up and perched right above me.

In New York, standing at the bottom of a skyscraper canyon is an awe-inspiring reminder of human ambition, especially for someone like me, from a small rural village.

People often ask me for my favourite place in Britain. I don’t have one—not in the static sense. My favourites are routes, like weaving down side streets in London, and cutting through the British Museum on my way to Kings Cross. There’s something delightful about passing priceless artefacts as you head somewhere ordinary.

For me, walking is more than just movement—it’s a way to engage with people, buildings, and history. While I appreciate the beauty of nature, I find urban landscapes provide endless intrigue. They invite questions: who lived here? What stories do these streets hold? And when you walk with others, the conversations take on a different texture. Walking side by side allows for unhurried dialogue, a rhythm that feels freer than sitting across a table.

There’s also an inward connection. Walking gives me the mental space to think, to process, and to let ideas take root. The act of moving connects me to my surroundings, and certain streets or landmarks become tied to specific thoughts or conversations. In that way, a city doesn’t just shape how I move through it—it shapes how I think.

Wandering isn’t just about getting lost

Most of us don’t truly live in our cities. We exist in small orbits: home, work, a favourite pub, or a café. Cities are presented as vast playgrounds, but we experience them in confined zones. Walking at night can break these limits.

Follow the sound of distant music down an unfamiliar alley. Push open that door that looks like it shouldn’t be entered. Let curiosity guide you.

Wandering isn’t just about getting lost—it’s about discovering connections. To the streets. To the people. And most importantly, to yourself.
