A Love Affair with Mayon
The first time i set eyes on Mayon I fell in love with her. That was over 20 years ago. We had just arrived in Daraga on the night bus from Manila and stopped off at the house my friend Martin was building.
We climbed up to the roof and there she was, still wrapped in cloud but not enough to hide her beauty. She was tempting, seductive and very secretive. Then she covered herself again in cloud and i was left with my imagination for the rest of my stay there.
It took me a further 10 years before i was able to return to Bicol. This time i was determined to see more of her and she invited me closer exposing her full beauty.
I have seen her fully naked with that perfect conical shaped body rising up to her smoking tip. As yet i have only seen her beauty and playfulness, but never an eruption.
I love the way she plays with the clouds spinning them round her body and up into the air.
One day as i was passing I noticed that the Letters G O D had been spelt out along her side….. I wonder what she was trying to say !!! Maybe to remind us that she can change her moods anytime she wishes to, and not to take her for granted.
Her slopes are very fertile and almost any crop can grow…… coconut, pineapple, abaca, mango, bamboo, cacao, vegetables………. the list goes on. Whole communities benefit from her generosity and prosper.
Just dont forget that as beautiful as she is when calm, Mayon is a volcano and, just like a woman, can lose her temper at anytime !!!!!
