ABC of Backpacking – U
U for Umbrella
An umbrella is an often-overlooked yet invaluable backpacking companion. Whether you’re navigating a tropical downpour or seeking shelter from the sun, a compact umbrella can save the day. As the saying goes, “Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.” It’s a small item that can make a big difference in unpredictable weather.
U for Universe
Backpacking opens up a universe of experiences. From stargazing in the desert to meeting diverse people with unique stories, travel expands your view of the world and your place in it. Carl Sagan once said, “We are all made of star stuff,” and backpacking often brings that cosmic sense of wonder and connection to life.
U for Unplanned
Some of the best travel moments are unplanned. When schedules go awry, spontaneity can lead to unexpected adventures—like discovering a local festival or a hidden trail. As J.R.R. Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost.” Embrace the uncertainty, and you might find magic in the unplanned.
U for Unique Experiences
Every backpacking trip offers something unique—whether it’s hiking a mountain at sunrise, tasting an unfamiliar dish, or experiencing a local tradition. These one-of-a-kind moments are what make travel unforgettable.
U for Understanding
Travel brings a deeper understanding of the world and its diverse cultures. By immersing yourself in new environments, you develop empathy and respect for different ways of life. This broader understanding helps shape a more open-minded and compassionate traveler.
ABC of Backpacking – V
V for Video
Capturing your backpacking journey on video allows you to relive special moments long after the trip has ended. Whether it’s documenting a breathtaking sunrise or the vibrant energy of a bustling market, videos give life to your memories and let you share your experiences with others in a dynamic way.
V for View
One of the greatest rewards of backpacking is the views you encounter along the way. From panoramic mountain vistas to sweeping coastal scenes, the right viewpoint can leave you speechless. These moments often make the journey worthwhile, reminding you of the beauty and grandeur of the world.
V for Visa
For backpackers venturing across multiple countries, securing the proper visa is crucial. Each country has different visa requirements, and knowing the specifics can save you time and hassle. Always research ahead to ensure smooth border crossings and an uninterrupted adventure.
V for Vlogger
Travel vlogging has become a popular way for backpackers to share their adventures with the world. By documenting your journey on camera, you not only create memories but also offer tips, inspiration, and a glimpse into your unique travel experience. Platforms like YouTube have made it easy for backpackers to turn their passion for travel into a career.
V for Volunteer
Volunteering while backpacking is a rewarding way to give back to the communities you visit. Whether you’re teaching English, helping with environmental conservation, or working on a local farm, volunteering adds purpose to your travels and fosters deeper connections with local cultures.
V for Value
Backpackers are often on a tight budget, so finding value in experiences, accommodations, and meals is essential. It’s not just about spending less but getting the most out of your travel experience—seeking authentic moments and places that offer more than a hefty price tag.
V for Venture
To venture into the unknown is the heart of backpacking. It’s about pushing beyond the familiar, trying new things, and embracing the spirit of exploration. Each venture, no matter how small, adds to the richness of the journey.
ABC of Backpacking – W
W for Walk
Walk — every time you can.
Don’t worry, you will learn it. When my ex-boyfriend-slash-world-traveler-for-10-years visited me in the Philippines, he gets really pissed when asking for directions. A lot of people on the streets (especially in Manila) keep saying “far” or “it will take ages” when in fact, it’s only a 20-30 minute walk. Okay, a 20-30 minute walk is really far for us Filipinos because of the pollution (noise, smoke, and even human). We can’t even walk five minutes but when I started traveling, I learned it the hard way. I learned how to walk far distances because taxi is really expensive. However, walking gave me the chance to discover things on my own and it also served as a regular workout since I didn’t have one. – Trisha Velarmino
W for Wanderlust
Wanderlust is the deep-rooted desire to explore the world. For backpackers, this is the driving force behind their adventures. It’s about embracing new cultures, discovering hidden gems, and pushing personal boundaries. Wanderlust keeps travellers curious and eager for the next journey.
W for Waterfalling
Waterfalls are natural wonders that mesmerize backpackers with their beauty and power. Whether it’s chasing waterfalls in Southeast Asia or discovering hidden falls in South America, the adventure is always exhilarating. Waterfalling is about seeking out these serene, refreshing escapes.
W for WIFI
In the digital age, WIFI is a backpacker’s essential. Whether for staying connected with loved ones, navigating new cities, or working remotely, reliable WIFI can enhance the travel experience. But, don’t forget to unplug and enjoy the moment.
W for Windsurfing
For the adrenaline-seeking backpacker, windsurfing offers a thrilling blend of sailing and surfing. With a board beneath your feet and a sail in hand, you can glide across crystal waters, propelled by the wind, in destinations like Greece, Hawaii, or the Philippines.
W for Winter
Winter travel brings a unique charm to backpacking. From snow-capped peaks to cozy mountain towns, winter destinations offer a serene escape for those who love skiing, snowboarding, or simply soaking in the beauty of a snowy landscape.
W for WordPress
Backpackers often document their journeys on WordPress blogs. Sharing stories, photos, and travel tips not only helps preserve memories but also inspires fellow travelers. With WordPress, backpackers can easily create beautiful blogs to connect with a global audience.
ABC of Backpacking – X
X for Xanadu
An idealized place of great or idyllic magnificence and beauty – once one of the ultimate traveller destinations – Xanadu (aka Shangdu, Shang-tu, and Kaiping), located in Inner Mongolia, northern China, was made first the capital (1263-73 CE) and then the summer capital (1274-1364) of the Mongol Empire by Kublai Khan.
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich had a hit with “The Legend of Xanadu” in 1968

In some parts of the world, particularly in Vietnam, the word “Xu” refers to a currency unit. Backpackers travelling in Vietnam should familiarise themselves with the local money, as knowing how to handle xu and dong will help with bargaining and budgeting. Whether it’s bungee jumping, skydiving, white-water rafting, or mountain climbing, Xtreme sports add an adrenaline rush to the travel experience. For thrill-seekers, these challenges create unforgettable memories and stories to share.

The Japanese phrase 横飯 – yoko meshi has an interesting meaning. The word ‘meshi’ literally means ‘boiled rice’ and ‘yoko’ means ‘horizontal”. When used together the phrase describes “Yoko Meshi” the stress of speaking a foreign language. For backpackers, traveling to countries where the language is unfamiliar can be challenging, but it’s also a rewarding experience.
