15 Easily Accessible Waterfalls in Abra for People who Hate Hiking

Abra has hundreds of beautiful waterfalls scattered throughout the entire province. However, many of these waterfalls are hidden away in hard to reach areas, far from the nearest road.

So, what if you want to see waterfalls, but don’t like the outdoor life, can’t hike, or just want to see something quickly? Fortunately, there are several great waterfalls in Abra that are perfect for those that want a waterfall that requires little or no effort to visit and are easily accessible.

All fifteen of the waterfalls listed below are either visible from the road or require a short, easy walk along an easy to follow trail. No matter how much you hate hiking, these easily accessible Abrenian waterfalls are a great choice to indulge yourself in a little bit of nature.

The best months for waterfalls in Abra are from July to October during the rainy season.

1. Pantoc Falls, San Quintin

Pantoc Falls is the first easily accessible waterfall in Abra after passing through the Tangadan tunnel. Just 10 minutes walk from the parking, There is a short and easy 4 metre wide river crossing where you can already see the falls, before walking along the path by the rice fields.

2. Tangke Falls, Sabulod, San Quintin

The home of one of the most famous people in Abra is also home to one of the easiest to view waterfalls. You have to pass right by the house and workshop of Abra’s one and only “National Living Treasure”, Teofilo Garcia.  Drop in and buy one of his unique hats. He will even sign it for you too.

An easy to follow trail through the village and along a well worn path will lead you to Tangke Falls. For the more energetic of you there is a path leading up to the top of the falls, if you wish to climb.With a nice big pool for swimming it also makes for a nice spot for a picnic.

3. Ligwa Falls, Poblacion San Quintin

A short 5 minute drive from Poblacion San Quintin you will arrive at Ligwa Falls which can be seen from the road. If you want an even closer look, getting to the bottom of this waterfall is quite easy and only 50 metres away. You will have to clamber over some small rocks to reach Ligwa Falls and its basin.

4. Kili Falls and Hotspring, Tubo

Although the drive to Kili Falls is long, the walk to the falls is short and scenic. When you arrive in Brgy Kili, Tubo just follow the signs to the falls. The road skirts the village and you can park at the entrance to the trail.

The path is easy to walk along and well maintained. Be sure to bring a picnic with you to enjoy whilst there. An added bonus, although a bit of an uphill trek going there is the hot spring. The more adventurous amongst you may like to climb down to the cave where you can experience a hot shower drizzle.

5. Nalnaan Falls, Vira, Tineg

Located right by the side of the road when travelling to Vira, the municipal centre of Tineg. 

Nalnaan Falls is not only  spectacular but it’s also one of the most accessible in Abra. In fact, you could view this waterfall from inside your car and still have a very good view of this waterfall.

6. Tibuor Falls, Brgy Cabcaburao, San Juan

Find your way to Brgy Cabcaburao, San Juan and just before reaching the entrance you will pass right by Tibuor Falls but you will not be able to see it. There is a stairway going down to the river which could be difficult for some people. Once you reach the river the falls come into view and it is just a case of how close you want to go and explore them.

For non hikers there are plenty of rocks to sit on and bathe your feet whilst your companions can clamber up to the basin pool.

7. Tiggalay Falls, Brgy San Marcial, San Isidro

One of the most stunning waterfalls in Abra when in full flow, and no hiking needed. From Penarrubia follow the road to San Marcial. Then drive through the barangay until you reach the falls area which you can’t miss as it’s right by the road. 

A short 50 metre walk and you arrive at the towering limestone cliff and cascading Tiggalay falls. There is a pool to bathe in too.

If you have spare energy and feeling like a bit of an adventure go explore the upper falls. There is a trail to the left with a steep climb to a hidden world. 

8. Panaklisan Falls, Sitio Mabongtot, Sallapadan

Panaklisan Falls is another great option for those looking for easy-to-reach waterfalls in Abra. The drive there is a long but scenic one along the Manicbel river. Located in Sitio Mabongtot  Panaklisan Falls is just a short walk along a concreted path from the village.

Even better, this waterfall has a great hanging bridge doubling as a viewing platform to see the falls from. When you’re done viewing the waterfall, you can walk down to the resort building or go for a swim in the cool water.

9. Penned Falls, Brgy Bolbolo, Pilar

Penned Falls are a series of short falls with a dam to control the flow of the river at the top. They lie at the end of a track. You can ride a motorbike all the way. 

This is a popular picnic spot with plenty of huge flat rocks to lounge around on. 

A few kilometres further downstream is Pinsal Falls in Sta.Maria, Ilocos Sur.

10. Gilong Falls, Malamsit, Penarrubia

Those wanting a look at Gilong Falls will have to walk about 10 to 15 minutes through the forest from the parking area, but even this trail is fairly easy for those that don’t like hiking.

There are three main levels with the best being at the bottom. It does mean that you need to exert a little effort but to witness these Kaparkan like limestone terraces, it is very worthwhile. 

11. Agtulong Falls, Poblacion Malibcong

A single drop falls just 5 minutes walk from the road before entering the gates of Poblacion Malibcong. There is a shallow pool at the bottom of the 5 metre drop.

Afterwards drop by Poblacion and visit the old wooden church.

12. Boni Falls, Poblacion Luba

The excitement is in the journey. Enjoy riding the Balsa across the Abra River.

Boni Falls is a great one for people who love waterfalls but hate hiking and are only 2 minutes away from Poblacion down a narrow path. 

It might be enough to wander around the lower levels for those who prefer not to hike, but with another 15 or so levels to explore these falls offer so much. It is advisable to take a guide if you decide to try and reach the upper levels. Wear proper footwear and carry snacks for the way.

13. Tubong Falls, Brgy Bonglo, Licuan-Baay

The best thing about Tubong Falls is that there is no hiking involved at all. You can buy some snacks from the Tubong Market right next to the falls, sit on the wall opposite and enjoy the view.
Tubong Market is a very popular stopover for drivers heading up to Licuan-Baay and Malibcong. This makes it an excellent place for people watching too. Jeepneys also take a break here to refill radiators with water.

14. Nangaskasan Falls, Nagaparan, Danglas

Drive up the Ilocos Norte road from Danglas and after passing through Nagaparan you will arrive at Sagao Viewdeck. From here in the distance you can view the magnificent, 70 metre high, Nangaskasan Falls and the Bandi River way below. 

If you want some real adventure with river crossings and some hiking then there is a trail close by leading down to the river and eventually the falls. But it is around an hours hike which won’t be any good if you don’t like hiking. 

15. Labo Falls – Ableg, Daguioman

Yet another long, long drive to another end of the road in Daguioman passing through Sallapadan and Bucloc. The drive is again very scenic along the Bucloc River valley.

Labo Falls is just 15 minutes easy walk away along the trail to Basakal Falls, the first part of which passes through the rice terraces of Ableg along a concrete path. 

There is a steel bridge there from which you can also view the falls and the river. 

Continuing on to Basakal Falls is definitely not for those who hate hiking but very worthwhile for those adventurous souls.

Some Tips for Waterfalling

Here are some tips for staying safe whilst chasing waterfalls not just in Abra but anywhere.

• Be careful on the wet rocks, for they can be very slippery.
• There is no mobile signal in many places. Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged for taking photos.
• Take a dry bag to safeguard your valuables and electronics.
• Camping close to river banks is not usually a safe place to stay overnight.
• Always tell someone if you go river trekking alone. Tell them of your plans and estimated time of return.
• Pay attention to the weather. Sudden rain can create flash floods, especially in narrow gorges.
• Beware of Hypothermia. It can be a real risk if you’re not used to staying in cold water for long, 
• Wear comfortable trekking shoes with rubber soles.
• Bring a bottle of drinking water with you as not all river water is potable.
• Remember to leave no trace. Take good care of mother nature. Enjoy and be Responsible.
